Thanks to the micocoulier, people from Sauve have put in place an ingenuous process to cultivate
the fork. Starting from a micocoulier grain they obtain, after 5 or 6 years, a tree that
will be trimmed a few centimetres from the ground.
Each stump will produce a dozen suckers of a curious bud : the flower of Lys that will give birth
to 3 stems, the future hayfork 's beaks.
After 6 or 8 years of successive trimmings and detailed cares the suckers will get into the successful shape. Then, the fork is harvested and baked in the oven before being peeled. Craftsmen can obtain the wished curve to the nozzles thanks to the flexibility of the heated wood. Then, nozzles are placed into a special mould in order to adjust the curve and trim the hayfork to the right size.
A last passage in the oven up
to 120 degrees, for about 15
up to 20 hours, will give the
hayfork its final shape and
strength.
Finally, the hayfork will be
Refined and kept for
one year in the conservatory
before being marketed.
